What is WELS?
WELS is the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme, established under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Act 2005. Registration and labelling are mandatory for tap equipment, showers, toilets, urinals, dishwashers, washing machines and flow controllers offered for sale in Australia.
The label carries two things: a star rating out of six, and a water consumption figure in litres per minute (or litres per flush for toilets). The litres figure is the one to compare when two products share a star rating.
Does a higher star rating mean weaker pressure?
Not necessarily. Efficient tapware reduces flow through aerators and flow restrictors that mix air into the stream, so the perceived pressure at the outlet can stay comfortable while the volume drops. Feel is subjective, which is why testing a shower head in a showroom is more useful than comparing numbers.
Where it does matter: some efficient outlets are designed for mains pressure and perform poorly on a gravity-fed system. Check the minimum operating pressure on the specification sheet if your home is gravity-fed.
